When you study the great leaders you will consistently find that they studied team leadership skills. You will learn to work with a group and take them where they need to go, this is essential. Maintaining a positive attitude is a big factor in teamwork this keeps everyone upbeat. Leave your ego at home learn to work with and build up your team. Your training will be passed along to everyone you come in contact with. Some will receive some will not you probably will not know, but you will know you tried, this is what counts. When we learn through these programs that the more we can learn the quicker we will get to the top of our chosen field. Also as we continue our training we will be able to help people in other fields. Your self-esteem and self-confidence will be some of your greatest assets. A program will teach you how to present yourself to groups and individuals in a very gracious manor. The best way to keep knowledge is to give it way. When you have the gift of knowledge and know how to give it away people will listen. This will be one of your greatest gifts that you can give yourself.

Addiction is Devastating For a New Born Baby
Why would you want a child to be born addicted ? Just because its mother is. If you can put the mother through treatment before the baby is born it will get properly detoxed. If the baby is born without being treated in the womb they have to go through horrible withdrawals possibly death. If we could educate the public and our doctors to these facts if would enhance the general health of both mother and child. If you ever have the misfortune of having to watch a child go through withdrawals you will understand.
Thank goodness there are people, treatment facilities and organizations that will help people to arrest there addiction. A lot of people have good success if they work at staying sober or straight. There is a lot of help if you just seek it out.
A lot of people become addicted on there own or with the help of “friends”. Ten percent of the people in the world were born to be an alcoholic. Ninety percent of the people who take hard drugs become addicted. Not very good odds to say the least. Most people do not know this or do not care.
Some doctors that specialize in the treatment of mind altering drugs and alcohol abuse, know through experience, that they can treat a pregnant woman for her addiction. When they do not Know how to treat a baby for addiction. This is a very bad situation that most people do not even think about. An addiction specialist will treat the pregnant woman every time to save her and the fetus. A regular doctor says “oh no, this type of treatment could hurt the fetus”. They are just ignorant to the facts of addiction and the treatment thereof.
The average doctor with all of there knowledge does not know much about addiction and less about the the treatment. Most doctors not realizing or meaning to have helped a lot of there patients become addicted. Doctors are taught to relieve pain therefore they will give the patient some medication. This is well and good until the patient decides, if a little is good a little more is better. First thing you know they have become addicted, they did not tell the doctor that they may have a few drinks to calm there nerves. Also they will go to another doctor and get another prescription and so forth.
There is a lot of knowledge to be learned as we go through life as long as we are not to bullheaded. Leadership skills training will enhance all of our lives. If we do not spend but about fifteen minutes a day on average on continuing education we are backing up. You should not just study your chosen field but open up to some general knowledge.
I just hope that one person will read this article and think about how wonderful it would be, if you would be responsible for helping to save a mother and child. Keep this in mind and if you see someone in trouble please help.

Is Leadership Your Calling
Leadership is having a calling and answering it … and that feeling in your gut is ultimately tied to “how happy will this make me. Leadership is about setting and not just reacting to agendas, identifying problems, and initiating change that makes for substantive improvement rather than managing change. Leadership is also NOT about a title or a job or position.
Leadership has been described as the “process of social influence in which one person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task”. Leadership remains one of the most relevant aspects of the organizational context. It also can be perceived as a particularly emotion-laden process, with emotions entwined with the social influence. Leadership is a matter of intelligence, trustworthiness, humaneness, courage, and discipline. A good leader of people in these environments requires a different set of skills to that of front line management. Leadership skills for a changing world solving complex social problems. Leadership can be shown bottom-up or sideways to people who don’t report to you. Leadership re-invented is an occasional ACT, like creativity, not a role or position. Leadership is based on youthful rebelliousness, the drive of young people to challenge the status quo and find a better way.
Leaders signal their goals, intentions, and attitudes through their expressions of moods. Leaders emerge from within the structure of the informal organization. They also are recognized by their capacity for caring for others, clear communication, and a commitment to persist. These people who demonstrate persistence, tenacity, determination and synergistic communication skills will bring out the same qualities in their groups. Leaders sell the tickets for the journey, Managers drive the bus to the destination.
Leadership takes energy … do you know any energetic people that are not happy. A leader appears as the sum of all your experiences interacting with other people throughout all your upbringing an all of your adult life.
Group members with leaders in a positive mood experience more positive mood than do group members with leaders in a negative mood. An affective tone represents the consistent or homogeneous affective reactions within a group. Also an affective tone is an aggregate of the moods of the individual members of the group and refers to mood at the group level of analysis. Groups with leaders in a positive mood have a more positive affective tone than do groups with leaders in a negative mood. Group processes like coordination, effort expenditure, and task strategy.
Leadership is not something you acquire by learning a handful of well meant tricks from some shady life coach… leadership is a calling, yes, I also believe in that but we must admit, there are some people who possess that inner trait. When you feel a calling you should follow it as soon as possible. If you think, I am to old, I will be 50 in 4 years, you should get started because in 4years you will be 50 anyhow. Leadership behaviors and development of leadership style and skills will ultimately be based on a persons behavior. Leadership is the art of mobilizing others toward shared aspirations. These traits can create a virtuous cycle for the management, employees, clients, stakeholders, and others. Leadership is about behavior first, skills second. A leader relies on management skills too, but more so on qualities such as integrity, honesty, humility, courage, commitment, sincerity, passion, confidence, positivity, wisdom, determination, compassion, sensitivity, and a degree of personal charisma.
A job can be performed with different styles. Leadership is often more about serving than leading. Your best solutions lie in the needs and wishes of the followers. There are many journals about leadership; look out for them, they can teach you a lot. The findings from these articles and leadership development will justify your time spent on research.
Many articles appear in the press and trade journals, this research project identified the following seven leadership skills as most critical for success, now and in the future: Leading people: directing and motivating people. First, these competencies are areas where we find people continually getting themselves into trouble and secondly, most of the nine competencies listed have a direct and even causal effect on the seven competencies that the participants found to be insufficient to meet future leadership requirements.
If leading is about anything, it is about relationships. Learning how the nine “unimportant” competencies impact and drive the seven “important” competencies will help to fill the large gap now and for decades to come. All the skills like relationship building, compassion, self-awareness, etc. all boil down to perhaps the single most important leadership skill there is: communication.
For those of us in the field of leadership and management development to continue to write, influence, speak, and coach to penetrate the business leader’s psyche in a way that will demonstrate meaningful awareness and thereby reflect tangible organizational change. Diversity in skill is a reward to those leaders that embrace the work needed to both accomplish your goals and encourage those similar lessons in others. Ethical leaders call for morals, fairness, caring, sharing, no false promises or unreasonable demands on others, etc. I have a policy of distributing free abridged versions of my books on leadership, ethics, teamwork, motivation, women, bullying and sexual harassment, trade unions, etc. While these subjects are easy to explain, they are not so easy to practice.
Some people are born naturally to lead more than others. Those who want to be a leader can develop this ability. And many qualities of effective leaders, like confidence and charisma, continue to grow from experience in the leadership role. Some leaders can adapt and use different leading styles for given situations. People new to this kind of position (and supervision and management) often feel under pressure to lead in a particularly dominant way. Dominant leadership is rarely appropriate however, especially for mature teams. Tough, overly dominant bearing people give teams a lot to push against and resist. Leaders of course need to be able to make tough decisions when required, but most importantly leaders should concentrate on enabling the team to thrive, which is actually a ’serving’ role, not the dominant ‘leading’ role commonly associated with leadership. Today ethical leaders are more important than ever. This coincides with massively increased awareness and interest among people everywhere in corporate responsibility and the many related concepts, such as Fair Trade, sustainability, social and community responsibility.
Today there is huge awareness of, and interest in, more modern leadership methods. The radio discussion highlighted the need for effective modern leaders to have emotional strength and sensitivity, far beyond traditional ideas of more limited autocratic leadership styles. Incidentally as a quick case-study, the BBC illustrates an important aspect of leadership, namely philosophy.

Leadership – Successful People are not Necessarily Good Leaders

Many people assume that if someone is successful it is because they have good leadership skills. Some people assume that if a business is successful it is because it has good leaders. Leadership isn’t something that is particularly easy to pass on to other people. Sometimes a company is successful because a past leader was very skilled as a leader and the current leader simply has kept things running the same as before.
Great leadership is a rare skill. It is much more rare than most people realize. For most people it doesn’t come naturally. It is amazing how many organizations are successful even though they have only marginally competent people leading them. Many times this is because the structure of the organization helps make up for a leaders short comings. Sometimes it is because a particularly talented staff that makes up for the leaders deficiencies.
While great leadership skills can make someone successful, the inverse is not true. Being successful doesn’t make you a good leader. If you are looking for leaders to learn from make sure you are looking for people who actually have good leadership skills and not just someone who is successful. You can’t assume that someone is a good leader just because they have had success. Many times people try to emulate people who have had success and try to follow their leadership styles. While this might be a good thing people often end up mimicking the bad habits of individuals.
Don’t assume that someone’s leadership style is effective just because they are successful. Many times they may be successful in spite of their leadership skills not because of their leadership skills. A good organizational structure can often hide someone’s poor leadership skills. Many times leaders are simply riding the wave of momentum from an earlier success that their leadership skills may have had very little part in actually creating.
Some people who are perceived as being great leaders have a huge entourage of people around them to insulate the organization from their poor leadership skills. These people act as a buffer to prevent the deficit of leadership skills from having a negative impact on the organization.
By carefully evaluating the leaders around you, you can teach yourself to discern who is successful because of their leadership skills and who is successful in spite of their leadership skills. If you find yourself emulating leaders around you, make sure that they are leaders who have true leadership skills and not those who just appear to have leadership skill simply because they are in a successful position.

Leadership – Do We Know What It Is? 4 Pointers To Start You On The Road To Becoming A Leader

It might be reasonable to assume that leadership can be developed. However, there has been and still is, considerable debate on the issue. Even the experts are divided. This article shows how everyone, irrespective of their position, can develop leadership skills.
A great deal of work has been done by many authors and researchers in trying to identify and define “leadership”. The vast body of research has focused on leadership traits, habits, competencies, behaviors, styles, values, skills and characteristics. Dave Ulrich (Ulrich, D et al, Results Based Leadership, Harvard Business
Press, Boston, 1999) categorized much of the research
into:
- Who leaders are – values, motives, personal traits- What leaders know – knowledge, skills and abilities- What leaders do – behaviors, habits, styles and competencies However, when one looks at the vast body of research into leadership, it is mostly concerned with: – the inputs of leadership and leaders, – not the outputs – ie. what leaders achieve.
Two significant factors have led to a great deal of the confusion around the issue of “leadership” and the definition of leadership itself.
Firstly, many authors erroneously use “leadership” and “management” interchangeably as if they were the same thing.
Secondly, a great deal of the research into leadership has been with people who are in formal organizational positions (e.g. supervisors, managers, senior executives) – the inference being that leadership is an integral part of the formal management role (Parry, K.
W., Leadership Research: Themes, Implications, and a new Leadership Challenge, Leadership Research and Practice, Warriewood 1996).
Our experience in designing, developing and implementing management and leadership development programs, processes and interventions over the last twenty years has led to the development of The Leadership Benchmark™ (http://www.nationallearning.com.au/index_files/LeadershipDevelopment.htm), a 360 developmental tool for leaders and aspiring leaders. Much of the initial research emanated from focus groups of key stakeholders (participants, peers, managers, staff, customers, suppliers etc) conducted as part of these development initiatives and the subsequent follow-up interviews, coaching sessions and evaluation processes and forums.
In developing The Leadership Benchmark™, we have clearly delineated that:
- Leadership is different from and distinct to, management – it does NOT necessarily occur as part of a formal management position- Leadership is contextual and therefore has to do with outputs (what the leader achieves) as much as what the leader is or does (inputs)1. Leadership v’s Management Almost 100 years ago, Mary Parker Follett described a manager as “one who gets things done through people”. This description is still used by management educators and scholars today, but in my opinion should be changed to: “one who gets the things done that are described by the organization in the manager’s role or position description, through the people they have been assigned”. My contention is that, if you are a manager, then:
- You become a manager when you sign on for the job- You only become a leader when your people say so. So, you get given the title of “manager” from the organization and people will do things for you (either well or not so well depending on how well you manage them) because of WHAT you are not WHO you are. Only your people (your team, the people you manage) can give you the title of “leader”.
In other words, the organization gives you your “corporate” manager’s hat that lets everyone in the organization know that you are officially a manager. Then, your people, when they believe in you, give you your leadership badge, your badge of honor! I am indebted to my colleague Dennis Pratt (Pratt, D., Aspiring to Greatness – Above and Beyond Total Quality Management, Business & Professional Publishing, Sydney 1994) for enabling the clear distinction between leadership and management that has assisted our research in developing The Leadership Benchmark:™ . This distinction is described as:
• Leading: Leadership occurs at all levels of the organization. The essence of leadership is concerned with creating the following conditions that encourage others to follow:
- A shared understanding of the environment.
- A shared vision of where we are going.
- A shared set of organizational values.
- A shared feeling of power.
• Managing: While the leadership function is “big picture” the management function on the other hand, has a narrower focus. Leavitt described leadership, as “path finding” while management was “path minding”. Management is situational and involves:
- Getting things done (task focus)- Through people (relationship focus).
2. Leadership is contextual and is concerned with outputs The Leadership Benchmark™ focuses purely on the following four outputs achieved in any particular organizational context by the leader:
- A shared understanding of the environment.
- A shared vision of where we are going.
- A shared set of organizational values.
- A shared feeling of power.
Whereas many other (quite legitimate) management 360 tools focus on the management function. Managers who aspire to be leaders therefore need more than the feedback they might get from a normal 360 managerial profile.
3. If you are a manager, what does this mean for you? Anyone in the organization can become a “leader” irrespective of their formal organizational position. Just because you have a formal title of “manager” does not mean you are a leader. So for example when a fire breaks out in the building and the brand new young employee who has just completed induction training, and who instructs people to follow the evacuation procedures impeccably, shows as much leadership as the CEO who has just announced the new corporate strategy for everyone to follow.
Here’s a quick test to gain some indication on your status as a leader. Once you have been in your current role for say, 9 to 12 months, ask yourself “Would my people do the things I now ask them to do even if I were not their manager?” If you can truthfully answer “Yes”, then you are well on the path to becoming a leader. I suspect, that many of you will probably answer this with a “Maybe” – try not to be concerned at this, as the road to leadership is a long one, but a truly rewarding one. If you are concerned that it seems to be taking you “forever” to develop as a leader, keep in mind the experience of one of the greatest leaders of our time, Nelson Mandela who spent 27 years in prison waiting to show how he could lead his country! 4. How to develop yourself as a leader. Our research indicates that leaders become leaders because they do four things (at least) for us:
1. They help us understand and make sense of our environment. So for example, when things aren’t working out or are unclear for us, they are able to explain what is happening in practical terms that we can understand.
2. They help give us a sense of direction. They are able to paint a picture of a brighter future and help us believe that we can achieve the things we want to achieve.
3. They give us a belief in the values that are important to us. In doing so, they make us feel part of a team of people that share these values and have the same aims.
4. They are able to make us feel powerful by allowing us the freedom to make decisions about our life, work and the future.
