All affiliate programs require you to sign an agreement. This agreement should clearly state the terms and conditions for you and the merchant.
When you join a network marketing that pays a commission, you need to know what they mean by the term “revenue”. A lot of new affiliates make mistakes in this area of the contracts. The program may say it pays a 5% to 10% commission but only based on their definition of revenue.
The majority of network marketing programs base commissions on the gross amount of the sale. That means that they pay based on how much they actually earn from the sale. This may sound appealing but make sure you read all the fine print. The gross sale amount may not include deductions for credit or debit card payment surcharges, gift wrapping surcharges and more.
There are some network marketing programs that have a very strict definition of revenue. You may get paid a commission based on the profit the merchant makes from the sale. That means if a book you promote sells for $20 but the profit for the merchant is $10, you get paid a percentage of the smaller amount. That will reduce your commission dramatically.
You want to watch out for how a merchant handles returns when you get paid on commission. A lot of affiliate programs pay commissions only when a product is paid for and when the customer chooses to keep it. If the item were to be returned, you could lose your commission. You could also end up making up the difference if there is not enough commission in your account to cover the difference. If this is what you are signing up for, make sure you are clear on how it works.
